Odessa, Texas — A 15-year-old Texas boy has been charged with three counts of capital murder after allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend’s mother and two younger siblings at their home in Odessa, police report. The incident has left the community in shock, particularly during the holiday season.
Alleged Attack at Family Home
Authorities say the teen, whose name is withheld due to his age, initially planned to shoot his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend outside of school. However, he reportedly changed his plan and went to the family home at 8740 Hunter Miller Way on Tuesday, armed with a handgun.
Once inside, police allege he shot and killed:
- Jessica Rodriguez, 39, the mother
- A 9-year-old boy, the younger sibling
- A 13-year-old girl, the older sibling
All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police Response and Suspect Apprehension
The teen fled on foot after the shootings but was captured by Odessa Police about 40 minutes later. Police Chief Mike Gerke confirmed that the teen’s ex-girlfriend was unharmed and it is unclear if she was home at the time of the attack.
“It was such a tragic and cowardly act of violence. It’s the kind of thing that really marks a community. Particularly in this holiday season, it’s a hurtful, horrible thing,” Gerke said during a media briefing, according to local NBC affiliate KWES.
Authorities are continuing to investigate how the teen obtained the firearm, with Chief Gerke noting that statements made by the suspect are being carefully evaluated.
“We know what he told us, how he got the gun, but we don’t necessarily believe everything that he tells us about that,” he said.
Community Reaction
The slain children’s father, Roy Martinez, has expressed his grief and devastation, launching a GoFundMe campaign. He described his heartbreak in the wake of the tragedy, saying, “It will never be complete anymore.”
Neighbors and community members have been left reeling from the incident, which underscores the dangers of gun violence and domestic disputes involving juveniles.
Charges and Detention
The teen suspect is currently being held at the Ector County Youth Center. He faces three counts of capital murder of multiple persons, marking one of the most severe youth-related crimes in the region in recent years. Authorities have emphasized the seriousness of the case, as well as the ongoing investigation into the events leading up to the tragedy.
