SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Springfield police say they caught a 16-year-old driving a stolen car over the weekend and have booked him into jail. They said this is not the first time he’s stolen a car.
The Springfield Police Department said that when the teen was caught, he had an ankle monitor on him because he had stolen a car before. However, it wasn’t working when police said he stole another car on Saturday.
At 8 a.m. that day, stolen in the area of Griffith Avenue and Sudbury Road was a 2022 GMC Acadia. Later that same day, police found the stolen Acadia at Cook Street and McCreery Avenue, according to officials.
Police say the stolen car was going very fast and into oncoming traffic. It finally came to a stop on a train track near 19th and Washington Streets. The 16-year-old suspect got out and ran, but was caught at 17th and Reynolds Streets.
Before being arrested, the teen was charged with motor vehicle theft, aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen car, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and reckless driving. Even though the teen passed the requirements to be locked up, officials said that there was nowhere in the state for him to go. He was finally given back to a parent.
