“There is a growing sense of fear,” says Lani, a native of Wailuku, who shares her thoughts. The doors to our home were never locked before. At this point, we don’t just lock them; we check them twice.
Poverty and the Effects of Drugs on Society
The increase in criminal activity on Maui is not taking place in a vacuum. One of the primary contributors to the occurrence of violent occurrences on the island is the ongoing struggle with drug addiction, notably the prevalence of methamphetamine, according to the leaders of the community. In addition, the problem has led to an increase in property crimes, with over 1,200 instances of theft, break-ins, and vandalism being reported in the previous year.
The difficulty of the economy adds still another element to the dilemma. “Addiction and poverty create a perfect storm,” says Mark Keawe, a community outreach worker explaining the relationship between the two. “Crime becomes a means of survival for people when they feel hopeless and trapped.”

At the heart of the matter is the personal impact that the people of Maui have experienced. For some people, the consequences of criminal activity are disastrous and immediate. For some people, the most profound wounds are caused by the gradual loss of trust and community that occurs over time.
- As of late, Nohea, the proprietor of a little shop in Lahaina, has begun closing her establishment earlier in the evening. When I worked late, I used to feel comfortable. These days, I’m terrified of being out after dark.
- One of the police officers on the island, Kalani, acknowledges that the lack of personnel makes it even more difficult to address the problem. To effectively handle this matter, we require additional resources. Having the impression that we are constantly playing catch-up is quite frustrating.
Maui’s Initiatives Bring Hope to the Island
Even though there are many obstacles to overcome, there are rays of optimism in the shape of grassroots initiatives and community-based programs that are aimed at regaining Maui’s sense of security.
- The “Pono Pathways” Program is a community project that provides both educational and mentoring opportunities to young people with the goal of preventing them from engaging in criminal behavior.
- Maui Clean & Sober Coalition is a charitable organization that offers assistance for addiction rehabilitation with the primary goal of lowering the number of recurrent offenses that are associated with substance misuse.
- Community Watch Groups: Residents from all across the island are banding together to form community watch groups in order to patrol their communities and strengthen their relationships with the local law enforcement community.
How Maui Can Move Forward: What It Requires

The island’s strong feeling of community and cultural resilience offer a solid foundation for establishing a safer future, despite the fact that the problems may appear to be insurmountable.
