An unhinged man slashed a woman in the neck with a broken bottle during a terrifying random attack in Soho Monday afternoon, cops and sources said.
The 25-year-old victim was walking on the corner of Wooster and Broome streets when the maniac smashed a glass bottle, crept up behind her and launched at her with the broken shards around 3 p.m., cops said.
The woman was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where she is undergoing surgery, but is conscious and alert at this time, NYPD Assistant Chief James McCarthy said during a briefing.
“She did not look good,” an eyewitness told AM-NY. “She was bleeding from the neck and was pale as she was put in the ambulance.”
Leading up to the bloody slashing, the suspect threw the bottle at another woman, 29, and then picked up the pieces to target the 25-year-old victim, authorities said.
The 29-year-old wasn’t injured.
The alleged assailant, who gave a fake name to cops, was quickly apprehended by police officers near the scene, law enforcement and sources said.
He flashed a creepy smile at an AM-NY reporter taking photos and video of him.
“I am on camera,” said the man, who was wearing an NYPD hoodie and a gold chain, according to the outlet.
No charges have been announced Monday evening and the suspect has not been identified.
McCarthy, who is the commanding officer in Manhattan, said police believe mental illness might have been a factor in the unprovoked assault, but authorities were still investigating.
