Serial robber reoffends at Boston brewery just weeks after release, officials say

A Boston man broke into a Fenway brewery not even three weeks after he was released from prison for similar crimes, according to a Suffolk County district attorney

press release

.

Michael Dias, 46, allegedly broke into Fenway’s Trillium Brewery around 3 a.m. on July 3 by throwing a rock through a door, a common move of his from his previous crimes, the release says.

“It is always our hope that incarcerated individuals keep their lives moving forward when they re-enter society,” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement. “The facts here indicate that this person reverted, very quickly, to the behavior that sent him to prison in the first place.”

Officers arrived on the scene after a security guard noticed the smashed door and called it in. Police found the broken glass door, a large rock inside, and a smashed cash register.

According to the release, surveillance footage, blood droplets throughout the bar, and the similarities with the past crimes all led authorities to Dias.

In 2019 and 2020, Dias committed a series of robberies where he smashed the door of a business with a rock and broke the cash register, the release noted. In 2020, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven years in prison, of which he served five years.

“Incarceration is a punishment we seek only when the facts and circumstances support it and public safety demands it,” Hayden said.

On Friday, Dias appeared at Roxbury Municipal Court where he was charged with breaking and entering at night, malicious destruction of property over $1,200, larceny from a building, and being a common and notorious thief. Judge Dana Pierce released him on personal recognizance, ordering him to stay away from the area of the brewery.

Dias is set to reappear in court on Sept. 25 for a probable cause hearing and to be appointed counsel.
