Multiple charges have been brought against a mother in California after her 4-year-old son shot himself earlier this week.
Local news stations like CBS Sacramento, ABC affiliate KXTV, and NBC affiliate KCRA say that 26-year-old Latisha Walker was arrested on Friday, Oct. 25, after the Sacramento Police Department said her son shot himself with a gun around 1:45 p.m. on the 4500 block of Mack Road.
CNN reports that Walker’s bail was set at $75,000. She is now being charged with three felonies: having a gun hidden in a car, criminal storage of a firearm, and endangering the life of a child.
On the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office inmate site, it says that Walker was released on Saturday, Oct. 26.
When PEOPLE asked the Sacramento Police Department for more information on Sunday, Oct. 27, they did not answer right away.
KCRA said that the killing happened inside a car in a parking lot. The news source also said that the child is likely to survive after being taken to a nearby hospital.
KCRA said that several witnesses said Walker was inside a store when the shooting happened.
Reports from CBS Sacramento say that people in nearby companies heard the boy whine for help. Shynice Cordoba, 19, who was in a nail salon at the time, told the news source that she heard the mother crying and a “noise.” She did not hear a gunshot.
Cordoba said, “I go outside, and he’s just lying on the floor.” “I need something to hold his wound in place.” I get some bandage and put it on his cut. “I talked to him and he talked to me. He was really scared.”
“He said over and over that he shot himself.” I told her, “Don’t worry, you’re not in trouble.” “It’s okay,” she said next.
Cordoba said, “He asked me to pick him up.” But I had to tell him, “No, you can’t get up,” to calm him down. You need to stay here. We also talked about Paw Patrol and his age and other things. “Until they got here.”
Police told CBS Sacramento that the child got medical help at the scene of the accident before being taken to the hospital.
KCRA reports that the first responder “put pressure on his wound” and helped “keep him on his side.”
Officer Anthony Gamble, a spokeswoman for the Sacramento Police Department, told the Sacramento Bee that the shooting was being looked into and that police were trying to figure out how the boy got the gun.
Based on CBS Sacramento, Walker’s first court date is set for October 31.
