NEW CASTLE, Oklahoma —
There are only two weeks left until the election, but some Oklahomans say their yard signs are being stolen.
KOCO 5 talked to someone who said that the election season has been hard for her and her family.
“They did take this one and the two down there.” “I’ve since replaced those and even added another,” Teppi Hannon said. Her signs were stolen from her home in Newcastle.
Police in Newcastle said they are looking into the sign thefts.
“It’s not true that I said, ‘Oh, it had to be a Trump supporter.'” Someone chose to do something bad, Hannon said.
Hannon said that on Sunday morning, she saw that some of her signs were gone. She said she thought it was because it was windy until other people in the area said the same thing.
Hannon said she has been a registered Republican voter for years, but she is now taking safety precautions for her family.
Hannon said, “I’m afraid it might go beyond them just taking signs and starting to do damage to property.”
The chair of the Garfield County Democratic Party in Enid told KOCO 5 on Wednesday that she was getting new signs because so many of their old ones had been stolen.
The cops in Newcastle said they had never seen anything like this before and pushed for free speech.
It’s great that my friends who back Trump can make that choice. That’s what makes America great. “We need to be nice to each other too,” Hannon said.
Some Oklahoma City residents said online that the theft of signs had hurt them, so KOCO 5 called the Oklahoma City Police Department. But police officials said they hadn’t heard of any reports.
Officials in the city said that if you are caught taking election signs, you could be charged with theft, trespassing, or other crimes.
