Red Sox INF Marcelo Mayer out indefinitely due to right wrist sprain

Due to a recurring injury, Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer will be out indefinitely.

Before Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Fenway Park, Boston put the 22-year-old infielder on the 10-day disabled list due to a sprained right wrist. The accompanying transaction was the recall of infielder David Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester.

At some time during Wednesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Mayer seemed to have suffered the ailment. Due to soreness in his right wrist, he was taken out of the game in the fifth inning.

Mayer told reporters Friday that he didn’t have any broken bones and that he wasn’t yet certain how bad his sprain was. To find out more, he will meet with the team’s training staff on Friday.

Mayer stated, “I just felt a little tight grab in my wrist when I took a swing in my second at-bat” (via Chris Cotillo of MassLive). After then, I knew there was nothing I could do, so I just called it a game.

Reporters pointed out When Mayer talked about his injury, he seemed depressed. Nevertheless, in spite of the situation, he provided a quote full of hope.

Mayer stated, “I’m in some pain, but hopefully it’s not too bad and I can get back on the field soon.”

According to Tim Healey of the Boston Globes, Mayer further stated that, considering his history of injuries since being selected by the Red Sox in 2021, the timing of his illness is cruel and extremely bothersome.

In actuality, he had already suffered injuries to his right wrist. Mayer missed a number of games early in the 2022 season due to right wrist pain, which was ultimately determined to be a sprain.

Boston is considering a second opinion, but surgery has not been ruled out, Cotillo said.

Reporters asked manager Alex Cora about Mayer’s condition prior to Friday’s game.

He said, “We’re gathering information” (via Healey). We’ll get more during the week and during the weekend. We’ll notify you when we reach the point when we can see what’s going to happen.

Since suffering the injury on Wednesday, Mayer has been spotted sporting various braces and splints. On Thursday, KDR MedSpa in Boston took a picture of him in a splint.

With Mayer out, Cora predicted that Ceddanne Rafaela would play more at second base and that Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran, and Roman Anthony would fill out the outfield from left to right. Masataka Yoshida will be the Red Sox’s designated hitter, according to Cora.

Mayer, who has appeared in 44 games since making his Major League debut two months ago, is suffering from the injury. He had a.674 OPS and batted.228 with four home runs and eight doubles.
