The South Carolina Highway Patrol says that on Friday, one person died when two classic cars crashed on a road in the Midlands.
Cpl. David Jones said the head-on crash happened in Sumter County around noon.
Jones says that a 1985 Oshkosh industrial truck was going west on U.S. 378. Jones said that the truck crashed into a 1990 Honda motorbike that was going east in the westbound lanes near the intersection with Brewington Road.
Jones says that the motorcycle rider died at the spot.
The guy who died was 73-year-old Ray Prosser from Florence County. Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker called it an accident.
Jones said that the truck driver wasn’t hurt and that no one else was hurt either.
It wasn’t clear if Prosser had a helmet on or if the truck driver had a seat belt on.
Not much was known about why the motorcycle had gone into oncoming traffic, but the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office are still looking into the crash. Baker said that the body will be autopsied on Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety says that as of October 20, 2024, at least 785 people had died on South Carolina roads. DPS said that 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina last year.
DPS records show that at least 16 people have died in crashes in Sumter County in 2024. The DPS said that 30 people died in the county in 2023.
