After a short chase that finished in a crash on Monday night in south Phoenix, police shot and killed a man who they say pointed a gun at them.
Police say that around 10 p.m., two patrol officers were sent to the area of 15th Avenue and Chipman Road for a report of a home attack. Police said that the caller told dispatchers that a man with a gun was breaking into the house. Police say that when they arrived, they saw a pickup truck leaving the area with the person they thought was the suspect inside.
The police turned on their lights and sirens, but the driver of the pickup truck kept running. He crashed his truck into a short block wall near 15th and Wier streets, which is about two blocks north of where the break-in was reported.
Police say the man driving the pickup truck got out of it with a gun in his hand, so they told him to stop and drop the gun. Police said that the man ran toward a house and, when he got to the driveway, pointed a gun at the police. That’s when the police fired their weapons.
Jaurigui Martinez, 32, lives a few houses away from where the killing happened. He was leaving when he saw police activity in the area. He recorded police sirens and heard a male cop yelling before he heard gunfire.
A Chevrolet Silverado was being taken from the area on a trailer truck after 10 a.m. Lucero, 49, who lives nearby, said the truck looked like it was in the middle of 15th Avenue after hitting the wall of a corner house.
According to police, the man was given medical help until the fire department came and pronounced him dead. Police found a guy who they think broke into the house. They didn’t say his name, but they said he was in his early 40s.
The cops say that detectives found two handguns on the man and a rifle inside the truck.
On Tuesday, Phoenix police shot and killed a man who they said pulled out a gun when they went to talk to him after a woman called to say he was trying to jump her fence.
Reeson said that the killings on Monday night and Tuesday were the 15th and 16th shootings by Phoenix police this year. The Arizona Republic has found that Phoenix cops have shot and killed 13 people in 2024. These two most recent shootings are among them.
