Pennsylvania Couple Charged Nearly a Year after Relative Found Decomposing in Home

Washington County, PA — A Pennsylvania couple has been formally charged nearly a year after authorities discovered the decomposing body of their relative inside their residence. James Bebout, 69, and Debbie Bebout, 64, are facing theft, conspiracy, and abuse of a corpse charges after allegedly living with the remains of James Bebout’s brother, 64-year-old Michael Bebout, for six months without reporting his death.

Gruesome Discovery of Michael Bebout’s Remains

Police first responded to the home in January 2025 after James Bebout told investigators that he had found his brother “stiff as a board” when bringing him breakfast. Upon entering the home, authorities discovered nothing but skeletal remains in the bed, according to a criminal complaint obtained by local NBC affiliate WPXI.

House of Horror: Conditions Inside the Home

Greene Washington Regional Police Chief Will DeForte described the residence as a “house of horror”, noting that in his 35 years of law enforcement, it was among the most atrocious conditions he had encountered.

“There was wall-to-wall dog feces. The situation looked like a hoarder had lived there, very difficult to traverse through the residence, and the odor was extraordinarily unpleasant,” DeForte told WPXI at the time of the discovery.

Timeline and Suspected Cause of Death

Authorities believe Michael Bebout died at least six months prior to the discovery while living with his brother and sister-in-law. Officials suspect his death was due to natural causes during the summer of 2024. Despite the death, the Bebouts reportedly cashed Michael Bebout’s Social Security checks, depositing roughly $20,000 into their accounts over the following months.

Lt. Nathan Ferree told local ABC affiliate WTAE that Debbie Bebout appeared to pretend to care for Michael, while James Bebout allegedly remained unaware for a period of time.

Charges and Arrest Warrants

Following the investigation, arrest warrants were issued for James and Debbie Bebout, who are believed to reside in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Both face charges of:

  • Theft
  • Conspiracy
  • Abuse of a corpse

Police have emphasized that they do not suspect foul play in connection with Michael Bebout’s death, focusing instead on the alleged financial exploitation and failure to report his passing.

Community Shock and Response

The discovery has left neighbors and officials in Washington County shocked by the combination of hoarding conditions, prolonged concealment of a death, and theft of Social Security funds. Law enforcement officials hope the case raises awareness about the importance of reporting deaths and monitoring vulnerable family members, particularly in situations involving elderly or isolated individuals.
