Early this morning, all incoming lanes of the Parkway East were closed due to a catastrophic crash just beyond the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, severely disrupting traffic.
At approximately 1:45 a.m., the accident occurred, and emergency personnel promptly reached the location. At least one person was transported to the hospital, but dispatchers told KDKA that it is uncertain what their current status is.
The specifics of what caused the collision have not been made public, however KDKA’s news crew on the site saw several automobiles engaged in the collision.
PennDOT has thus blocked all inbound lanes, requiring motorists to take a diversion at the Edgewood/Swissvale exit. Since it’s uncertain when the Parkway will fully reopen, morning travellers should prepare for delays and look for alternate routes.
Crews are attempting to clear the wreckage while authorities look into what caused the incident. For reopening estimates, drivers in the vicinity should use caution and keep up of traffic reports.
