United Parcel Service (UPS) has announced plans to lay off 244 workers at its North Portland shipping hub, as the facility will temporarily shut down for upgrades starting in July.
The company filed a notice with the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission, detailing the impact of the closure, which will affect workers beginning May 30.
Lori Cruz, UPS Human Resources Business Partner Director, confirmed that while 916 hourly employees are assigned to the Swan Island facility, only the 244 inside manual workers are expected to face permanent job losses. “UPS will attempt to mitigate this impact by offering work to affected employees in other positions where possible,” Cruz said in the notice.
This announcement is part of a broader trend of layoffs in the Portland area, which has seen major companies cut jobs over the past year. Last April, Nike reduced its workforce by over 700 employees at its Beaverton campus. Similarly, Intel slashed 1,300 jobs at its Hillsboro site, and Wells Fargo plans to cut 500 positions at its Hillsboro call center by the end of 2025.
This move by UPS follows a previous round of layoffs in April 2024, when the company closed its North Portland sorting warehouse, eliminating 312 part-time and 19 full-time positions.
