Nationwide Recall: Fuel Bottles Sold at Amazon, Walmart Pose Death Risk to Children

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a nationwide recall of roughly 11,200 bottles of liquid fuel sold through Amazon, Walmart, and directly from the manufacturer, citing a risk of serious injury or death to children.

According to the agency, the Firefly Fuels Safe & Green 32-ounce bottles violate multiple federal safety standards and pose a poisoning hazard.

Health Risks Identified

The CPSC warned that hydrocarbons in liquid fuels are especially dangerous if inhaled or accidentally swallowed. Even small amounts can enter the lungs, potentially causing chemical pneumonia, lasting pulmonary damage, or death.

The recalled bottles were found to have non-child-resistant nozzles and carried an incorrect “Non-Toxic” label, both in violation of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act and the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.

Recall Details

Firefly Fuels Inc., based in Sarasota, Florida, manufactures eco-friendly fuels marketed for use in lamps, torches, and lanterns. The products are promoted as biodegradable and clean-burning alternatives to petroleum fuels.

The recall, announced August 14, applies specifically to the Firefly Fuels Safe & Green 32-ounce bottles sold between August 2019 and May 2025. The products were available on Amazon.com, Walmart.com, and the company’s own website for about $20 each.

So far, no injuries have been reported.

Instructions for Consumers

The CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using the non-child-resistant nozzle applicator and replace it with the child-resistant closure originally provided with the bottle. If the original closure is unavailable, bottles should be stored out of reach of children.

Firefly Fuels is offering free replacement child-resistant caps and corrected safety labels to affected customers.

Next Steps

Consumers who purchased the recalled fuel bottles should contact Firefly Fuels to receive the replacement parts and updated labeling. The company’s contact information is available through the official recall notice on the CPSC website.
