Nationwide Garbage Strike Expands, Threatening Trash Collection for Millions

A nationwide strike by members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has expanded to affect trash collection for millions of Americans, including 2 million residents in Los Angeles and operations at a major landfill in Ohio, the union announced Tuesday.

The walkout, which began in the Boston area in early July amid stalled contract negotiations, has now spread to over 2,000 workers affiliated with waste management giant Republic Services in California, Ohio, Illinois, Georgia, and Washington. Workers in these states are either on strike or refusing to cross picket lines in solidarity, the union said in a press release.

Why It Matters

Garbage collection disruptions can lead to piles of trash clogging streets, increased rodent activity, and rising public health concerns—especially in the summer heat. Earlier this month, residents in parts of Massachusetts reported overflowing bins and growing concerns about children’s safety around uncollected trash, according to Boston.com.

Key Impact Areas

  • Los Angeles: Approximately 2 million residents could see trash collection delays or stoppages.
  • Youngstown, Ohio: A strike at one of the nation’s largest landfills may block the dumping of 12 million pounds of daily waste from New Jersey and New York City.
  • Nationwide: Cities in at least five states are currently impacted by picket line activity and suspended trash services.

What’s Behind the Strike

The Teamsters accuse Republic Services of union-busting tactics and a refusal to negotiate in good faith. The strike stems from failed negotiations between Teamsters Local 25 in Boston and Republic Services, which has since rippled nationwide.

“Republic’s strike has resulted in major disruptions to waste collections for millions of Americans nationwide,” the union said. “This is a direct result of the company’s illegal behavior and unwillingness to treat workers with respect.”

Republic Services has defended its position, stating it has offered employees a nearly 16% wage increase, with total raises reaching 43% over five years. Both the company and the union have been contacted for further comment.

As the strike continues, residents in affected areas are being urged to reduce waste output and stay updated on municipal alerts.
