MY TRUTH: I NEED HELP

By Cheryl Smith

Do you know what triggering is? Give Dr. Brenda Wall a call. Make a phone call.”I need help,” I said. Since the world seems to be going insane, I am actually in pain while attempting to think logically! But for the time being, ignore my emotions and health. You may not be aware of all the drama that is taking place in Texas. At the request of Texas Governor Greg Abbott and President Donald Trump’s surrogate Greg Abbott, Republicans devised a redistricting plan that will disenfranchise people and alter the composition of the U.S. Congress.Democratic House members traveled outside of Texas to make sure that a quorum was improbable in order to avoid taking part in a vote that would undoubtedly not be in their favor. To no avail, Governor Abbott called a special session. Threats were made against Democratic lawmakers. Last Thursday, yet another session was called. There has been a great deal of discussion, legal wrangling, and attempts to reach a decision (check out our coverage at www.texasmetronews.com).

Rep. Nicole Collier (D-Fort Worth) was arrested and referred to as a hostage when she refused to sign a permission form that would have allowed her and other Democrats with arrest warrants to leave the legislative chambers unless in the custody of a Texas Department of Public Safety officer.Rep. Collier’s treatment illustrates why we acknowledge Superb Women and the ongoing assault on Black women.I am incredibly happy of the several groups and individuals who are speaking out in favor of Representative Collier.Do you know her? Are you familiar with her story?About the representative, just so you know: The Honorable As a well-known lawyer, small company owner, grandmother, and mother of three, Nicole Collier has dedicated her life to achieving the American Dream. She was a single mother of two before graduating from high school, and her family and faith supported her in going to law school and beyond. Representative Collier holds degrees from Texas A&M University School of Law and the University of Houston. In addition to being a partner at West & Associates, LLP, where he specializes in employment law, public finance, school law, and commercial and general litigation, Rep. Collier is a member of Links, Inc. Rep. Collier never stops working on legislation, whether it’s opposing voter suppression, promoting the Affordable Care Act, establishing opportunities for HUBs, or outlawing e-cigarette cells!I’m confident she will be fine in the end because she is a fighter and has conquered many difficulties. However, why?Why should she have to put up with outdated, rude, and disrespectful behavior? This is a woman that we are discussing! She’s got a family. She needs things. As much as I blame the governor and other elected officials for this treatment, I also blame women who were born, those who lie down next to women, and, regrettably, those women who either remain silent or lie down next to the men who commit such a heinous act.Even if many want us to forget about slavery, it’s easy to understand how it managed to endure for so long given recent actions.A Black woman is being treated to terrible challenges and conduct in this instance. God! She’s a female. She needs things. In order to continue attending to her voters’ business, she ought to be in the comfort of her own home, enjoying a lovely, relaxing bath or shower, kicking off her shoes, and getting a good night’s sleep. She is sleeping wherever she can instead, not getting enough sleep, and not doing the things that women need to do to rejuvenate and reenergize. The right side of history is where she is.Others, like Collier, will keep making history while Abbott concentrates on efforts to obliterate the nation’s vile past.Rep. Collier is carrying out the actions of countless women throughout history. She is caring for other people! We must look after her.
