More Rain Expected in Flood-Weary Texas and New Mexico This Weekend

After a week of deadly storms and historic flooding across the South and East Coast, the threat of renewed flooding looms for Texas, New Mexico, and the Midwest

  • On Friday morning, heavy rainfall was already drenching parts of Iowa and Illinois, as storms pushed through the Midwest toward major cities such as Kansas City, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Grand Rapids
  • Nearly 19 million people remain under the threat of hazardous weather, with 1 to 2 inches of rain forecast for many areas and isolated totals of up to 5 inches possible through the weekend
  • The storm system is expected to shift east by Saturday, bringing severe weather to eastern Michigan and northern Indiana
  • Texas and New Mexico, which are still reeling from catastrophic floods, could face renewed flooding this weekend
  • Over 100 people died during Fourth of July weekend floods in central Texas, while at least three fatalities were reported in Ruidoso, New Mexico, where flash floods surged through burn scar areas
  • In Texas, the Guadalupe River rose more than 20 feet in 90 minutes, and in New Mexico, the Rio Ruidoso River surged 18 feet in 30 minutes, destroying homes and infrastructure
  • While Friday brings a brief reprieve, thunderstorms will return over the weekend, with a slight flood risk in Texas—especially in Hill Country, Kerrville, San Angelo, and Oklahoma City
  • New Mexico, including the Ruidoso area, also faces a burn scar flooding risk, particularly into Sunday morning
  • The East Coast has also been impacted by severe rain earlier this week, resulting in traffic standstills, water rescues, and two flood-related deaths in North Carolina
  • In Alamance County, two people were killed when their vehicles were swept away by floodwaters
  • According to meteorologists, the U.S. experienced four 1-in-1,000-year rainfall events over the past week—in Texas, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Illinois
  • As the weekend approaches, more showers and storms are forecast across the South, with Gulf moisture fueling the potential for further dangerous weather conditions

Travel disruptions are already being felt nationwide, with over 900 flight delays and more than 280 cancellations reported by 8:30 a.m. ET Friday. Authorities urge residents in affected areas to stay alert, monitor weather updates, and follow evacuation orders if issued.
