There is an abortion access bill on the ballot in Missouri this year, making it one of ten states with such a measure.
Missouri has been one of the most anti-abortion places in the country for a long time. Since Roe v. Wade was defeated many years ago, states have made it illegal to have an abortion, and all but one clinic in the state has closed.
Missouri had the fewest abortions in the country in 2021, the last full year before Roe v. Wade was overturned. Only 150 abortions happened there.
The suggested change would make it a constitutional right to have an abortion up to the point where the fetus can live on its own, as well as other types of reproductive health care, such as access to birth control and care for miscarriages.
People who are against abortion, including the Republican secretary of state of the state, pushed for months to keep Amendment 3 from being on the Missouri ballot. Those attempts failed in the end.
The state of Missouri is red, and former President Donald Trump won it by 15 points in 2020.
