by Miramar Beach, Florida — Nearly nine years after a Florida teenager vanished without a trace, authorities have confirmed that skeletal remains discovered in a wooded area of the Panhandle belong to Jacob Lyon, bringing a painful sense of closure to a case that has haunted his family and community since 2016.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office announced this week that DNA testing positively identified remains found in October 2022 as those of Lyon, who was 19 years old when his mother reported him missing nearly a decade ago.
Discovery Made During Land Clearing
Investigators said the remains were discovered on October 20, 2022, when a man clearing wooded land in the Miramar Beach area came across skeletal fragments and notified authorities. Deputies responded alongside the District 1 Medical Examiner, securing the scene and beginning a long and complex identification process.
Because of the condition of the remains, officials said determining the victim’s identity was not straightforward.
“This is not the result our community hoped for,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “For his family, we hope there is peace in knowing Jacob has been found.”
DNA Testing Took Years Due to Degradation
From 2022 through 2024, medical examiners worked to identify the remains using traditional forensic methods. However, years of environmental exposure and degradation made analysis difficult, delaying progress.
Ultimately, the medical examiner requested assistance from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which specializes in advanced forensic testing. Officials said FDLE was able to obtain a positive DNA match earlier this month, confirming the remains belonged to Lyon.
Authorities noted that prolonged exposure to the elements significantly complicated testing, requiring more advanced techniques and extended analysis.
Teen Went Missing in 2016
Jacob Lyon was reported missing in February 2016, when he was still a teenager. His disappearance launched a lengthy investigation led by the Niceville Police Department, which pursued tips, leads, and sightings over the years but was never able to locate him.
Despite sustained efforts, investigators were unable to determine:
- Where Lyon was last seen
- How he traveled from Niceville to Walton County
- What circumstances led to his death
Authorities have not disclosed additional details about his movements prior to his disappearance.
