The city of Miami, Florida — According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), Cheilen Hernandez Giron, a lady from Miami who is 24 years old, has been taken into custody on various felony counts relating to the sale and distribution of illegal substances. The arrest comes as a result of an investigation that was conducted by many agencies as part of the State Assistance for Fentanyl Eradication (S.A.F.E.) program, which is designed to combat drug trafficking throughout the state of Florida.
Hernandez Giron is being charged with multiple offences, several of which include three counts of possessing cocaine with the intent to sell it on a college or university campus, three counts of unlawful use of a communications device, three counts of possessing a controlled substance with the intent to sell, and one count of tampering with physical evidence.
“Bringing drugs into Florida’s universities will not be tolerated,” said Mark Glass, the Commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. “Students come from all over the world to pursue higher education in Florida, and they should not have to face the threat of this poison infiltrating their campuses.”
A report was received by FDLE investigators in July 2024 regarding Hernandez Giron’s potential involvement in narcotics activities on a campus of a nearby institution. This prompted the beginning of the investigation. During the course of various surveillance operations, members of the FDLE S.A.F.E. Task Force documented incidents in which she was accused of selling illegal substances.
A search warrant was carried out at Hernandez Giron’s residence on March 21 by law enforcement officials. During the course of the search, a number of prohibited substances were found and confiscated. These substances included marijuana, Xanax pills, cocaine, hallucinogenic mushrooms, and possibly even LSD drugs. Hernandez Giron is accused of attempting to destroy evidence while the operation was in progress, which led to an extra accusation of tampering with physical evidence being brought against him.
It was on the same day when Hernandez Giron was brought into custody and sent to the Turner Guilford Knight Detention Centre. The Office of the State Attorney for the 11th Judicial Circuit is the one that is currently handling the prosecution of the case, and she is currently waiting for her trial to begin.
With assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), the Florida Highway Patrol, the City of Miami Police Department, and the Florida International University Police Department, the investigation is still ongoing. It is being headed by the Miami South Florida S.A.F.E. Task Force of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
The authorities have emphasised that this case demonstrates their dedication to maintaining the safety of academic institutions in the state of Florida and the students who attend those institutions.
