Maryland Weather: Alert Day for arctic blast issued Thursday

Maryland Weather: Alert Day for arctic blast issued Thursday. The weather is going to be quiet and cold today. Strong winds, rain and snow showers, and extreme cold are all part of Thursday’s arctic blast.

Today’s weather should be quiet and cool, with sunshine giving way to more clouds. With highs in the lower 40s, we will still have to put up with a cold breeze. There’s a potential of a shower on Thursday morning as the clouds get heavier tonight. Overnight lows in the mid 30s are predicted, along with a strong southwesterly breeze.

It is anticipated that the arctic cold front will enter the area either immediately before or around daybreak tomorrow. Expect rain showers to swiftly change to either all snow or a combination of rain and snow along and ahead of the boundary. For a brief time, there may be heavy snowfall, which might cause minor accumulations on grassy areas, especially north and west of Baltimore. Keep an eye out for decreased vision during any strong snowfall.

Thursday afternoon and nighttime are dominated by winds and the severe cold as the snow showers dissipate. Higher elevations in western regions, such as the Catoctin Mountains in northern Frederick County and Parr’s Ridge in Carroll and Howard counties, may see gusts of over 50 miles per hour, while gusts from the northwest might reach over 40 miles per hour near the I-95 corridor.

BLIZZARD WARNING: From 9 PM today through 3 PM Thursday, Garrett County, Maryland, is under a blizzard warning. When visiting western Maryland, be ready for blowing snow and severe snowfall; in Garrett County, near-blizzard conditions are probable. In some places, wind chills may fall to almost or even below zero. There will likely be 4 to 8 inches of snow and winds of up to 55 mph.

Through Friday, the rest of the region will continue to see windy and cold temperatures. Thursday night’s low will be in the lower 20s, and by Friday morning, wind chills will be in the teens. Friday’s highs won’t be able to rise above the mid- to upper-30s. Friday night is predicted to be even colder, with lows of about 20 degrees predicted for several locations by Saturday morning.

Outlook for the Weekend

With highs in the upper 30s to about 40 degrees on Saturday, the weather will be chilly. But there will soon be a warming trend. Highs will return to about 50 degrees on Sunday. Sunday night will see more clouds, increasing the likelihood of showers on Monday.

Temperatures are expected to peak in the mid-50s on Monday and the lower to medium 60s on Tuesday. Midweek is predicted to see an active weather pattern, with multiple rounds of rain anticipated through the end of the week. Temperatures will be mild with highs in the 40s and 50s to end the week, even with the precipitation.
