Man Who Murdered Mom Outside Daycare Faces New Charges for Strangling Deputy

The murder defendant Orlando Mitchell, who is 36 years old, will be a very, very old man if he is able to live out his sentence for the shooting death of Krystal Walton, who was 32 years old and the mother of his baby, outside of a day care centre. On Tuesday, he was given a sentence of 66 years in jail for killing her and breaching a no-contact order that was issued on September 16, 2022, according to records that were kept in Marion County, Indiana. The 746 days of time-served credit, which is equivalent to a little more than two years, makes a slight dent in the amount of time that he has left.

On the other hand, this does not take into account his future murder trial for the suffocation of Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy John Durm, who was 61 years old at the time it occurred, on July 10, 2023, during an unsuccessful attempt to escape. At the moment, this is planned to take place in August of 2026.

As was previously reported, Mitchell waited outside of a day care centre in Indianapolis while Walton arrived outside of the facility separately. When Walton arrived at the facility to drop off her children at approximately 7:30 in the morning, Mitchell ambushed her and shot her to death right then and there.

NBC station WTHR reported that Mitchell’s grandmother met with police at the scene. She told them that she had not spoken to her son in more than a month because he had threatened to kill Walton and make it a “murder-suicide.” Mitchell’s grandmother disclosed this information to the police.

Officers received a report concerning Mitchell’s vehicle a few hours after the shooting, which was observed at the day care around the time of the shooting. The tip was received by the officers.

While Mitchell was engaged in a conflict with law enforcement, he was shot in the leg. While he was being transported in the ambulance, he did not hesitate to confess that he had been the one who had killed Walton.

According to WTHR, he was quoted as saying, “I shot that b—.” “I took that b— in the face with my gun.”

In the years that followed, Mitchell terrorised the victim, which ultimately led to the deadly gunshot.

“If he couldn’t see his son, she wasn’t going to be in his life either,” his mother told authorities, according to an affidavit obtained by the Indianapolis Fox station WXIN. This was one of the threats that he made.

A allegation of choking Walton, who was pregnant at the time, and threatening to murder her was brought against Mitchell in the year 2021. In July 2022, he entered a guilty plea, which allowed him to avoid jail time. However, in August 2022, he violated the protection order by entering the residence of Walton’s mother and told the victim, “If you call the police, it’ll be the last thing you do.”

She received a text message from him the following day, in which he wrote, “I promise on my life I won’t stop until you lose everything.”

In 2023, when Mitchell was being investigated for the murder of Walton, he used the chain of his handcuffs to strangle Deputy Durm, who had been with the department for 38 years, and then stole his sheriff’s van. According to the authorities, he crashed that. He was taken back into detention, and the authorities informed him that he had committed one more murder on his soul.

Orlando Mitchell sentenced for murdering Krystal Walton.
