Man Kills Sleeping Parents Over Suspicion Mother Stole Money for Motel, Police Say

According to authorities, a Missouri man killed his parents as they were sleeping in a motel because he thought his mother had stolen some of his money to pay for the stay.

Jason C. Sessoms, 20, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his mother, Maleeka Sessoms, 38, and father, Marvin Sessoms, 42. Around 3:45 a.m. on Friday, police found the couple dead from gunshot wounds at the Extended Stay motel located in the 4300 block of North Corrington Avenue in Kansas City.

The younger Sessoms was apprehended at the end of the day in Paw Paw, Michigan, about 600 miles away, after Kansas City police officers swiftly identified him as a suspect, according to a probable cause statement acquired by the Kansas City Star and local NBC affiliate KSHB. He was first taken into custody by Michigan police on charges of house invasion and other criminal offenses. According to records, the murder charges were filed by Missouri police on Monday.

According to the affidavit, the suspect’s 10-year-old sibling told police that his elder brother had killed their parents. According to investigators, the defendant and his younger brother were seen on security footage packing up a black Mitsubishi in the motel parking lot before leaving. The 10-year-old may or may not have observed the shooting.

The Sessoms family had been visiting Marvin Sessoms’ sister in Georgia, investigators later discovered. In order to retrieve the youngest son’s laptop, they went back to the Kansas City region. According to the affidavit, the sister also said that Jason Sessoms thought someone had “put out a hit on him,” which is why the family had been escaping the region.

According to the affidavit, the victims had ceased answering their phones at some point. His father’s phone was in Illinois, and Jason Sessoms once answered his mother’s phone. According to police, her brother and sister-in-law were found after the sister filed a missing persons report on Friday.

According to reports, the defendant first denied killing his parents after Miranda, attributing the killings to a “tall and buff” Hispanic male. However, according to the probable cause statement, he finally admitted to the shooting and stated that he thought his mother had stolen part of his money to pay for the motel room where they were staying.

Jason Sessoms is presently awaiting extradition to Missouri while incarcerated at the Van Buren County Correctional Facility in Michigan on a $2 million bond.
