From late tonight through Friday, a big winter storm is expected to hit New Mexico, bringing heavy snow, especially to higher ground. In northeast New Mexico and along the central mountain chain, blizzard-like conditions could happen. There could be accumulations of more than 12 inches, and in the Sangre de Cristos, they could reach over 24 inches.
Along with the snow, a backdoor cold front will bring wind and temperatures well below average to the whole state. As the winter system moves out on Saturday, residents can look forward to a short time of clearing and a slight rise in temperature through the weekend. In the affected places, roads are likely to be closed and power will go out.
