GLASGOW, Ky. – Nuway Custom Portable Buildings is helping people in east Tennessee who were hurt by Hurricane Helene.
Ten to fifteen movable and small homes will be sent to Newport, TN by a company in Glasgow on Thursday.
Jon McDougan, the owner, said that the gift project began when someone from Knoxville found them on Google and got in touch.
As part of the partnership, Nuway will match every dollar that the person and their friends earn. So far, they’ve raised about $100,000.
Last week, McDougan went to Newport to see the damage caused by Hurricane Helene and talk to people who lost everything.
“Whole communities have been wiped out.” “Many people don’t have flood insurance, so they’re living in tents in their front yards,” McDougan said. We’ve been thinking about how we could help because it’s getting cold there. We’re thankful for the business and want to “pay it forward.”
McDougan heard from an elderly couple who got a portable building that they just barely got out of their house before the water rose 30 feet in less than 18 hours.
“But it kept coming up.” “He told his wife that he didn’t think they would be able to make it,” McDougan said. “Right then, the helicopter came and saved them, and they both saw their house slide down the river.”
Someone else McDougan talked to said that her father had died the week before. The land that she and her son inherited washed away.
“They destroyed everything on this land that was his,” he said. “The house they were living in was lifted off its foundation and placed about 150 yards away from where it was.”
Nuway is working with a number of other people to get the buildings to Newport and raise money for them. They are sending houses of all shapes and sizes. Some are very small and only fit one or two people, while others are bigger and can fit a small family.
When the buildings are shipped, they will already have all of their electrical framing and foam insulation done. After that, people in Newport will finish the house by adding pipes, fixtures, and other finishing touches.
People like McDougan want to fill the houses with as much water, clothes, and other things that people need as possible. Anyone who has goods or money to give should get in touch with him.
Nuway’s office is at 2631 New Bowling Green Road in Glasgow, or they can call him at 270-590-3744 on his cell phone.
