Kansas City Mother Faces New Manslaughter Charge After Allegedly Placing Her Baby in an Oven. A grand jury in Jackson County has charged a mother from Kansas City with involuntary manslaughter after she claimed to have unintentionally put her infant in an oven.
Earlier this year, Mariah Thomas, 26, was charged with one count of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child in Jackson County Circuit Court. She entered a not guilty plea to the accusation. In a superseding indictment on Thursday, a grand jury added a count of first-degree involuntary manslaughter.
Thomas’ trial is set to start on January 13th, which coincides with the new charge.
After first responders stormed a house in the Manheim Park neighborhood’s 4100 block of Forest Avenue on February 9, her infant kid, who was one month old, was pronounced dead. According to court documents, the baby’s body was burned and her clothes were melted.
According to one witness, Thomas had called him back to their house and discovered that it smelled like smoke.
According to court filings, Thomas allegedly stated, “I thought I put (redacted) in her crib and I accidentally put her in the oven.”
Records from the jail show that Thomas is still being held on a $100,000 bond.
