Joe Milton is having a great first few months with the Cowboys, and he has no qualms about drawing good comparisons between his new circumstances and his first professional home.
After a Cowboys training camp practice this week, the former Patriots quarterback praised Dak Prescott, saying the veteran has aided him in a manner that his former team did not.
Milton informed reporters, through Tommy Yarrish of Cowboys.com, that Dak is an excellent leader. Respect him. He genuinely goes above and beyond to assist me, regardless of the coach’s presence during the meeting.
I have visited a different building. I am aware of how that works. Simply said, things are extremely different here.
When asked if he wanted a new beginning, Milton made his emotions about the Patriots more apparent, if his message wasn’t already obvious.
“Yes, I did prefer it,” Milton said. That was something my team and I came up with. I actually didn’t have to do or say anything because they were able to finish it. That’s about it. Just give my agent a shout out.
For almost his whole rookie season, Milton, who was selected by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, supported Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye as New England’s third-string quarterback. However, he had an opportunity to show off in the Patriots’ victory over the Bills in Week 18, throwing for 241 yards and a touchdown in addition to a running score.
Some assumed that Milton would be the Patriots’ main quarterback backup for the 2025 campaign after that performance. Milton’s future with the organization was jeopardized, though, when New England reached an agreement with veteran Joshua Dobbs at the start of free agency.
Following weeks of speculation, the Patriots dealt Milton to the Cowboys in April of 2025 in exchange for late-round picks (Dallas received a seventh-round pick, New England received a fifth-round pick). Milton described his trade to the Cowboys more than a month after the move as a blessing for four reasons: he got to play for America’s Team, in a dome, in the heat, and he got to learn from Prescott.
Since being traded, Milton has made disparaging remarks about the Patriots, and this is not the first time he has done so at the beginning of the Cowboys’ training camp. In May, he made a positive comparison between the offense he played under with Alex Van Pelt, the offensive coordinator for the Patriots the previous season, and the offense of incoming Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
Milton remarked of the Cowboys’ derogatory language in May, “It’s way different.” This offense reminds me more of my time in college. My most recent transgression was tagging everyone on the wrong routes. This attack is unquestionably explosive and faster.
At the beginning of the Cowboys training camp, Milton made a similar remark when he compared the two offenses once more.
At the Patriots, Milton stated that everyone was telling everyone what they were doing based on the play and how lengthy the play call was. One phrase here is an entire notion that essentially harkens back to my high school and college years. That kind of method, in my opinion, is quite beneficial for both new to an offensive and for learning the offense early.
In Dallas, Milton will have the chance to serve as the team’s main backup quarterback. As the Cowboys control Prescott’s workload, Milton is now receiving second-team reps and is even anticipated to receive first-team reps during training camps. He is currently vying for that slot with veteran Will Grier.
Prescott stated that he is eager to seek guidance and that he has enjoyed what he has seen from Milton thus far.
there meetings or on the field, Joe is a blast. You can see the excitement there, whether I’m making a play, Will is making a play, or he’s there, posing on the sidelines or dancing when he scores a touchdown or sprints out of bounds. “Prescott said.”
It’s infectious, extremely contagious. Additionally, Joe is a man who will constantly push me to improve, and we welcome that in the room; it’s part of the competition.
