Illinois Dad Shot Dead by ICE After School Drop-Off Incident

Franklin Park, Illinois – A father of two was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents Friday morning after allegedly striking and dragging an officer with his car. The incident occurred shortly after Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez dropped his children at school, according to his family.

What Happened

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said ICE agents attempted a vehicle stop as part of an immigration enforcement operation. Officials allege that:

  • Villegas-Gonzalez resisted arrest and ignored commands.
  • He drove his vehicle toward agents, striking and dragging one officer a “significant distance.”
  • Fearing for his life, the officer fired his weapon, fatally striking Villegas-Gonzalez.

The ICE officer sustained multiple injuries but was reported in stable condition Sunday.

Family Response

Villegas-Gonzalez’s family launched a GoFundMe page, stating it was “cruel what ICE agents did to him shortly after he dropped off his sons at school.” Advocates and relatives emphasized the impact on his children and community.

Political and Community Reaction

The shooting came amid heightened immigration enforcement in Chicago under Operation Midway Blitz, launched days earlier by the Trump administration. The plan, which includes deploying National Guard troops and federal immigration agents, has sparked protests across the city.

Illinois Rep. Delia Ramirez (D) spoke at a news conference Saturday, stressing that Villegas-Gonzalez had just dropped off his children before the fatal encounter. Local lawmakers and immigrant rights advocates are demanding transparency, including the release of any body-worn camera or surveillance footage.

DHS Statement and Background

DHS described Villegas-Gonzalez as a “criminal illegal alien with a history of reckless driving.” Records show four traffic violations between 2010 and 2019, including speeding, expired license, lack of insurance, and failure to use a child restraint. His attorney, however, said the cases were resolved favorably and “did not involve criminal violence.”

Investigation Underway

Federal authorities, including the FBI, are reviewing the incident. Investigators will examine available evidence, though not all federal agents are required to wear body cameras. Advocacy groups are calling for an independent review of ICE’s use of force in Franklin Park.
