Minneapolis, Minnesota – The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who fatally shot Renee Good last week suffered internal bleeding to his torso following the incident, according to two U.S. officials briefed on his medical condition. The officials said it remains unclear how extensive the internal injuries were.
The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that the agent, Jonathan Ross, was injured but has not provided additional details. The information was first reported by CBS News, which cited multiple federal officials familiar with the matter.
DHS Confirms Injury, Details Remain Limited
Homeland Security officials acknowledged that Ross was taken to a hospital after the shooting and released the same day. However, DHS has not responded to follow-up questions seeking clarity on the severity of the internal bleeding or the nature of the treatment he received.
Video footage from the scene appears to show Ross walking away after the shooting, a detail that has raised further questions as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the encounter.
Agent Has Not Returned to Work
According to one source familiar with the situation, Ross has not returned to work since the incident. The source did not specify whether his absence is related to medical recovery, administrative leave, or other reasons.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem previously confirmed that Ross was hospitalized briefly following the shooting and described him as an experienced law enforcement officer who believed he was acting in self-defense and protecting fellow agents.
“The officer was hit by the vehicle. She hit him. He went to the hospital. A doctor did treat him. He has been released,” Noem told reporters on Jan. 7.
Prior Injury Raises Additional Context
Court records show that Ross, a 10-year law enforcement veteran with ICE, was seriously injured in a separate incident in June in the Minneapolis area. During that earlier encounter, he was dragged by a vehicle during an attempted arrest, suffering injuries that required 33 stitches and hospital treatment.
That prior incident has added context to the current investigation, particularly regarding concerns over officer safety during enforcement operations.
Officials Cite Ongoing Threats
U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino said in a recent interview that Ross has faced multiple threats following the shooting.
“He’s had several threats against his life,” Bovino said, adding that Ross is currently in a safe location and continuing to recover. “We’re thankful that he’s recovering.”
Investigation Continues
Authorities have not released additional information about the shooting itself, and questions remain about the sequence of events leading up to Renee Good’s death. Federal officials say the case is still under review, and more details may be released as the investigation progresses.
