Holocaust Survivor Killed in California Hit-and-Run on Remembrance Day; Maserati Driver Sought

Sherman Oaks, CA – An 80-year-old Holocaust survivor and his service dog were killed in a hit-and-run crash in Los Angeles’ Sherman Oaks neighborhood late Tuesday night, a tragedy that unfolded on International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Police say the driver of a Maserati struck the pair while they were crossing the street and then fled the scene, abandoning the damaged vehicle nearby.

The victim was identified as Andriy Korshunov, a Ukraine war refugee who had survived the Holocaust as a young boy before rebuilding his life in the United States.

Crash Occurred Late at Night in Sherman Oaks

According to police, the collision happened around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 4400 block of Woodman Avenue. Investigators say Korshunov was crossing the street with his service dog when a Maserati, believed to be speeding, slammed into them.

Witnesses told officers the driver briefly stopped after the impact, then drove away, leaving Korshunov and his dog fatally injured in the roadway.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Maserati Found Abandoned Nearby

Police later located the Maserati just a few blocks from the crash site, authorities said. The vehicle reportedly had significant front-end damage and no license plates, raising further questions about the driver’s actions and intent.

As of Thursday, the driver had not been located, and the investigation remained active as detectives worked to identify and arrest the suspect.

Family Says Driver Showed No Mercy

Korshunov’s daughter, Ilana Korshunov, said her father survived atrocities no one should endure, only to lose his life in a senseless act of violence.

“He didn’t help him. He just hit and run,” she told KTLA.
“He killed two souls. I don’t know what he thinks about this. I mean, what horrible person he has to be to do that. How come?”

She added that the driver must face moral consequences beyond the legal system.

“God sees everything, and God sees what he’s done,” she said.
“He has to do something. First of all, apologize to God for what he’s done.”

Survivor of the Holocaust and War Refugee

Family members said Korshunov endured “unimaginable horrors” during the Holocaust as a child and later fled war in Ukraine, ultimately finding safety in California. Despite the trauma he experienced, loved ones described him as resilient, gentle, and deeply devoted to his family.

A GoFundMe created by his daughter describes him as a man who rebuilt his life and carried his strength quietly for more than eight decades.

“My father survived history’s darkest chapter, only to have his life taken so suddenly and senselessly,” the fundraiser states.
“Any support — whether through a donation or by sharing this page — helps honor his life, his survival, and the love he gave.”

Significance of the Date Not Lost on Family

The crash occurred on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a fact that has weighed heavily on Korshunov’s family. The day is meant to honor victims and survivors of the Holocaust and to ensure their stories are never forgotten.

For his loved ones, the timing added another layer of pain to an already devastating loss.

Public Safety and Hit-and-Run Concerns

Authorities say hit-and-run crashes remain a persistent public safety issue across California, particularly during late-night hours. Police are urging anyone who may have seen the crash or noticed a damaged Maserati in the area Tuesday night to come forward.

Leaving the scene of a fatal collision is a felony in California and can result in severe criminal penalties if the driver is caught.
