Grayson County Man Dies After Crash Turns Deadly in Shooting as Bystanders Tried to Help

Grayson County, Texas — A 34-year-old man is dead after deputies say a single-vehicle crash was followed by an armed confrontation that ended in gunfire while bystanders were attempting to render aid.

The incident unfolded around 5 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Old Town Road and Waldon Lane in Collinsville, according to the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies initially responded to multiple reports of a vehicle crash in the area. However, while en route, dispatchers began receiving additional calls reporting gunshots nearby, escalating the situation.

Crash Scene Turns Into Active Shooting Investigation

When deputies arrived, they confirmed that a single-vehicle crash had occurred. The driver — later identified as 34-year-old Bradley Bennett — was the sole occupant of the vehicle and had sustained injuries.

Authorities said Bennett was airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment.

Investigators later determined that as bystanders approached the crashed vehicle to help, an armed confrontation broke out.

Deputies say the driver was shot during the confrontation while bystanders were attempting to render aid.

Officials have not yet detailed what sparked the altercation or how many individuals may have been involved.

Death Ruled a Homicide

Bennett later died from his injuries, authorities confirmed. The Grayson County Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide, formally classifying the case as a criminal investigation.

Officials confirmed the fatal injuries were the result of a shooting following the crash.

At this time, it remains unclear whether Bennett’s initial crash was related to the subsequent shooting.

Texas Rangers Assisting Investigation

The investigation remains ongoing, with assistance from the Texas Ranger Division, a division of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Authorities have not announced whether any arrests have been made, and details about potential suspects have not been released.

Officials say the case is still active as investigators work to determine exactly what led to the fatal confrontation.

Law enforcement has urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward as they continue piecing together the sequence of events.

The deadly chain of events — from crash to confrontation to shooting — has left many in the Collinsville community searching for answers.
