Atlanta, GA – Get ready to bundle up and protect those plants! A widespread frost advisory has been issued across much of Georgia, including major metropolitan areas like Atlanta, Athens, and Macon, as temperatures are forecast to plummet to a chilling 27°F overnight.
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued the advisory, which will be in effect from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. EDT on Friday. This sudden dip in temperatures poses a significant risk to sensitive outdoor vegetation, potentially causing damage to crops and gardens.
“Residents across central, east-central, north-central, northeast, and west-central Georgia should take immediate precautions,” warns the NWS. “The threat of frost formation is very real.”
The affected areas span a large portion of the state, including counties such as Forsyth, Hall, Jackson, North Fulton, Gwinnett, Barrow, Clarke, Oconee, South Fulton, DeKalb, Rockdale, Walton, Newton, Morgan, and Greene, among others.
While frost advisories are not uncommon in Georgia during the early spring months, the expected low of 27°F is particularly concerning. Homeowners and farmers are strongly advised to take proactive measures to safeguard their plants. This includes covering vulnerable vegetation with blankets or cloth, or, if possible, bringing potted plants indoors.
“These temperatures can be especially harmful to young crops and gardens,” emphasizes the NWS.
Fortunately, the frigid temperatures are expected to rise after sunrise on Friday, alleviating the immediate frost threat. However, residents are urged to stay informed by monitoring local weather forecasts and checking the National Weather Service website for any updates. Stay warm, and protect your greenery.
