Garrett Crochet wants Red Sox ownership to ‘buy in’ at trade deadline

  • Getting to know which hitters could be trade candidates for Red Sox ahead of deadline

  • Red Sox complete 3-game sweep of Nationals with 6-4 victory

Rafael Devers, the Red Sox’s finest power hitter, was traded last month. One of the main advantages of the move, according to the front office, is greater financial freedom. Devers’ deal, which won’t end until 2033, still has more than $250 million left on it.

How should the Red Sox handle the trade deadline, given that it is less than a month away and the team is now in fourth place in the American League East? Are they supposed to be buyers or sellers?

The Red Sox’s offseason acquisition, pitcher Garrett Crochet, stated that he would like to see ownership added to the team’s roster.

According to NESN, Crochet stated that you want to perform as well as you can as a clubhouse and as a unit to ensure that ownership understands why they should invest. We’re providing them a lot of reasons, in my opinion, right now.

With five victories in their previous six games, the Red Sox’s record (46-45) is now one game above.500. The Washington Nationals, who are last in the NL East, were swept by the team in three games on Sunday.

Since Devers was traded on June 15, Boston has a 9–8 record. Hours after the Red Sox thrashed the Yankees at Fenway, the transaction was announced.

During a road trip to the West Coast, they struggled against the Giants and Angels, but in the last two weeks, they have recovered against Washington and Cincinnati.

On WEEI over the weekend, team president Sam Kennedy stated that, under the correct conditions, the front staff has the ability to buy from ownership at the trade deadline. According to him, the squad must perform well over the upcoming weeks in order to position itself for that.

The Red Sox would currently be the odd team out of the playoff picture. They have six postseason slots and the seventh-best record in the American League.

If the season ended today, Seattle (48–42) would have the final American League Wild Cards slot, 2.5 games ahead of the Red Sox. The other two Wild Card slots would go to the Rays and Yankees (both 49–41). At the moment, Toronto (52-58) leads the AL East division.

If the Red Sox decide to add players this month, pitching might become a top priority. The Red Sox rank 19th in opponents’ batting average, 21st in WHIP, and 17th in ERA in the Major Leagues.

In their recent victories, they had managed to score a lot of runs. In four of their last seven victories, they have scored ten runs or more.

The Red Sox are currently ranked 10th in home runs, fifth in total bases, sixth in RBI, ninth in batting average, and eighth in on-base percentage. However, Devers spent the majority of the season’s first half on the roster. He ranks 18th in OPS and ninth in RBI in the MLB. It’s difficult to replace a bat of his caliber.

All seven of the Red Sox’s remaining games will take place at Fenway Park prior to the All-Star break.
