Stockton, CA — A tragic mass shooting at a little girl’s birthday party in Stockton, California, has left four people dead, including three children, and several others injured, authorities confirmed. The incident, which unfolded just before 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Monkey Space banquet hall, is believed to be gang-related, according to Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi.
Deadly Chaos at a Birthday Party
Officials report that a total of 15 people were struck during the violent attack. Those killed were ages 8, 9, 14, and 21, while the injured ranged in age from 9 to 22 years old. Among the injured, a 9-year-old was listed in fair condition, while one adult sustained only minor injuries. The current condition of the other victims has not been released.
Mayor Christina Fugazi described the event as “domestic terrorism” and directly linked it to gang violence, calling for urgent action to prevent further tragedies in the city.
“Let’s call it what it is. This is domestic terrorism. This is gang violence, and it has to stop in our city,” Fugazi said.
Investigation and Suspects
Initially, law enforcement was searching for a single suspect, but the investigation has since expanded to consider multiple shooters. Heather Brent, spokesperson for the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, said that neighbors reported gunfire from multiple locations, adding to the complexity of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities describe the attack as targeted, and officials are exploring all angles. Federal and local law enforcement agencies are coordinating to locate the suspects, with assistance from the U.S. District Attorney’s office and outreach from White House advisers, who contacted Mayor Fugazi to offer support.
District Attorney Ron Freitas urged the gunman to turn themselves in immediately, while law enforcement encouraged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers to help bring justice.
Community Response and Support
The Stockton community has been left reeling by the shocking attack. Faith leaders organized a vigil on Sunday to honor the victims and pray for the injured, while schools are providing counseling services for students and families affected by the tragedy.
Mayor Fugazi shared her profound sorrow over the young age of the victims:
“They should be writing their Christmas lists right now. Their parents should be out shopping for them for Christmas. And to think that their lives are over. I can’t even begin to imagine what these families are going through. Breaks my heart.”
The youngest victim, 8 years old, was a student in the Stockton Unified School District, with a parent employed by the district. City leaders emphasized the importance of community support during this time of grief.
Statements from Officials
Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his condolences on social media, stating:
“Today, local authorities confirmed the victims of the Stockton shooting were just 8, 9, 14, and 21 years old — and that the attack was likely targeted. Our hearts break for their families, and the entire Stockton community.”
Mayor Fugazi and other local leaders continue to appeal to the public for any tips or information that could lead to the arrest of the gunman(s) responsible for the shooting.
