The Franklin County Fair returns this year from July 14 to July 20, continuing a tradition that began nearly 175 years ago. What started as a modest agricultural gathering has grown into a landmark community event celebrating local heritage, farming, and entertainment.
The fair was first held on October 22, 1851, by the Franklin County Agricultural Society at Sullivant’s Grove in Franklinton. Originally scheduled during the harvest season, the fair later shifted to July to accommodate changing seasonal trends and public interest.
As the fair evolved, organizers sought better facilities to host racing events and exhibitions. This led to a joint effort with Licking and Delaware counties to create the Tri-County Fair, held from 1896 to 1909. Eventually, the Franklin County Fair relocated to Driving Park in Columbus in 1910, known for its state-of-the-art grandstand and racetrack.
By 1918, Hilliard was selected as the fair’s permanent home, offering unmatched access via nearby railroad lines and ample space for growth. The change paid off quickly—1919 marked a record-breaking year in attendance and participation.
