Florida Father Jumps from Moving Family Vehicle, Leaving Kids Behind During Highway Altercation

Washington County, FL – A Florida father allegedly jumped out of the driver’s seat of his moving family vehicle on a highway Tuesday, leaving his wife and three children inside, authorities said. The dramatic incident reportedly stemmed from an alleged domestic dispute and has raised concerns over child safety during domestic altercations.

Chaotic Highway Scene

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported that officers responded after a 911 call from one of the couple’s children, who reported that parents Heather and Albert Searcy were fighting while driving on Highway 79.

Deputies located the vehicle and activated emergency sirens in an attempt to get Albert Searcy, who was driving, to stop. Instead, the car continued moving until he allegedly opened the door and jumped out while still in motion.

Wife and Children Take Control

Following the father’s leap, Heather Searcy quickly moved to the center console and successfully brought the vehicle to a stop with the children inside. Officers observed that Heather had visible injuries to her face, consistent with a physical altercation, and she reported that Albert had repeatedly refused to stop despite her pleas and the children’s requests.

Authorities added that Albert allegedly struck a child who had called 911 and seized the phone, further escalating the dangerous situation.

Background and Arrest

The family, who had recently relocated from Louisiana and were en route to return there, was examined by medics and cleared of serious injury. Albert Searcy was taken into custody at Washington County Jail. His mugshot reportedly shows a bloodied and dejected face following the incident.

Searcy faces multiple charges, including:

  • Tampering with or harassing a witness
  • Domestic violence battery
  • Fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement
  • Resisting arrest without violence
  • Child abuse
  • False imprisonment
  • Driving while license suspended or revoked

Community Safety Concerns

This incident underscores the dangers of domestic disputes escalating in public spaces, particularly when children are present. Law enforcement officials stressed the importance of reporting domestic violence promptly and taking precautionary measures to protect minors during such volatile situations.
