AUSTIN — Thursday morning, Austin police shot and killed a man at an apartment complex in the northwest of the city. Chief Lisa Davis said the man had shot at APD first. The department is planning to give more information at a press meeting on Friday.
It took place at the MAA Canyon Creek flats.
APD said that someone was being chased by other agencies when they stopped and stole a woman’s car at the nearby Four Points shopping plaza. The man then stole another car from a different part of the shopping center, according to the police.
The police found out the guy had a shotgun and another gun.
Police from APD said they found the stolen car at an apartment building where the person had broken into one of the units. APD said that as he was leaving, they asked him to stop, but he didn’t.
Police say that the man turned around and shot at them as he ran away. APD said that the police shot back and killed the man. No police officers were hurt.
People who live in the apartment building said, “It just really surprised me because this place is pretty quiet and nothing happens around here.” He said when he got home this morning, there were a lot of police cars around.
“It was pretty much taped off from the playground to the apartments,” he said.
Davis said that the whole thing was “tragic.”
“This is something that none of us in law enforcement want to see happen,” she said.
