HOUSTON – The reason for death has been confirmed by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences for one of the people who died in the recent helicopter crash.
Cesar Lerma has been named as one of the victims. His friends said he was a loving father and a detail-oriented worker who specialized in remodeling bathrooms and kitchens.
An old friend of Lerma’s, Garrett Kauffman, remembered, “He was a prince of a guy. Very soft-spoken, and his attention to detail was unbelievable.”
This father of three booked a helicopter tour of the city to make his youngest son’s wish come true. When the chopper crashed, killing everyone on board, this act turned into a tragedy.
“They took him on the helicopter ride, and from what I understand, it was going to be a tour of Houston,” said Kauffman, who had talked to Lerma’s older son about what happened.
There are videos of the helicopter falling going around on social media, but Kauffman didn’t watch them until Wednesday.
Kauffman finds comfort in his faith when he thinks about how short life is.
“The Lord heard my prayers. It didn’t hurt. We can’t ask God why. We are not able or strong enough to do that. “All we do is pray for their souls,” he explained.
Lerma’s son didn’t want to talk on camera, but he did talk positively about his father over the phone. He called him unique and said he would speak out about his father, brother, and stepmother when the time was right.
“It ended very badly for everyone.” Cesar, may you rest in peace. You will be missed. He said Kauffman.
When family members dropped off flowers for the memorial at the crash site, they told FOX 26 that the only thing that was still whole was a bag with a cell phone inside. The police were able to find a picture of the family before they got on the chopper and a selfie of the family on board.
Although the pilot’s name has not been made public, HCIFS says that he died from multiple direct-force injuries. As for Lerma, his wife and younger son all died from multiple burns and blows to the head.
