Doorbell camera footage shows a thief in Chicago’s South Loop posing as an Amazon delivery driver and taking products that were already on people’s doorsteps. The thief is seen dropping out empty parcels and removing what was already there.
During the course of the day, a delivery driver may be located in the South Loop, delivering packages to what seems to be every corner of the neighbourhood. On the other hand, the one burglar who is wearing an Amazon vest is able to blend in and steal from multiple people.
The man appears to be a genuine individual at first glance, as evidenced by the CCTV video that shows him delivering a parcel at a front door. However, a closer inspection reveals that he picked up and removed a parcel that was placed at Paul Wasserman’s door. He then left behind what Wasserman referred to as “just an old, sort of wet box just laying on the path.”
The Amazon imitation walked in and took the package away within minutes, replacing it with that empty, damp box. Wasserman recalls that a legitimate delivery driver was the one who initially delivered his shipment. However, the Amazon impersonator stole the thing away.
“He got to it before I did, basically,” Wasserman said. “I can’t do that.” “He showed up 15 minutes after it was dropped off.”
It was the same day that the individual who was wearing the Amazon vest made another appearance on the South Loop, which was located a few blocks away. Nevertheless, he had a difficult time this time as he removed a massive object that was intended for Crystal Chau and her children.
The mattress in question belongs to my son. According to Chau, the mattress is of the twin size. “So it’s like a big box.”
However, the thief is able to escape because he, for the most part, conceals his face with the empty box that he drops, and because he appears to be legitimate to anybody that he encounters.
According to Wasserman, “He had this situation completely under control.” “Somehow, he got the Amazon vest.”
“I feel like he’s just trying to blend in, pretend he’s delivering packages, and then take the real package,” Chau stated in response.
There are actual delivery drivers working in the South Loop and in many other communities. They are out and about doing their duties all the time. The activities of the thief, on the other hand, cause people to reconsider their assumptions about genuine delivery workers who are merely performing their jobs.
“For every intent and purpose, he looked like a regular Amazon worker doing his thing,” Wasserman remarked to reporters. “That’s about as smart as I’ve seen it be.”
“He must be following these delivery trucks, because the window is so short,” stated the representative.
According to a statement made by Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd) on Facebook, she has informed Central (1st) Chicago Police District Cmdr. David Harris about the thief and has requested that additional attention be paid to the area where the thefts are taking place. Therefore, in order to demonstrate the requirement for extra police resources in the South Loop, Dowell urged each and every victim to make a report with the police and to share any footage that they had.
It is not quite clear to me that I agree with it, but I would hope that it is true,” Wasserman added.
“On Facebook, a few folks who live nearby commented, ‘It’s pointless. Try not to do that. When Chau was asked about the prospect of making a police report, he responded, “It doesn’t do anything.” Therefore, I believe that we ought to go ahead and do it. It is not simply up to me. The neighbourhood is the problem.”
