Oak Harbor, WA – A small earthquake rattled areas of northwest Washington Tuesday evening with a magnitude of 2.5 in the vicinity of Oak Harbor.
The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) said the quake happened at around 10:48 p.m. PT, roughly 4 kilometers east-northeast of Oak Bay, Canada. The earthquake was at a depth of 46 kilometers, putting it under the Strait of Juan de Fuca between Vancouver Island and the northern coast of Washington state.
The shaking was weakly experienced throughout Whidbey Island, especially in Oak Harbor and its vicinity. Two responses were entered through the United States Geological Survey’s “Did You Feel It?” website, detailing weak shaking but no damage or injuries.
Homeowners are urged to check emergency preparedness plans, such as stockpiling necessary supplies and bracing heavy furniture. Although no aftershocks were registered, specialists advise keeping oneself updated on seismic activity via the USGS and PNSN.
Seismic activity in the area is constantly monitored to monitor trends that might herald stronger quakes.
