Spencer-David left Hollywood sitcom fame to become a veterinarian and a resident of Richmond, Virginia, after becoming well-known as the busybody younger sister of her brother Roger alongside co-stars Mabel King (as Mabel Thomas) and Ernest Lee Thomas (as Roger Thomas). Danielle Spencer traveled to Virginia even though she was born in New Jersey and her family eventually relocated to the Bronx.
After graduating from Tuskegee University Veterinary School in 1996, Spencer became a licensed veterinarian.
What’s going on? was a smash that was broadcast on ABC from 1976 to 1979 and is still remembered and replayed. Additionally, Spencer starred in a 1985–1988 revival of the show. In 2014, following a previous divorce, she wed businessman David L. David. That year, she also relocated to Richmond and began hosting pet-related WTVR segments.

In 2014, Spencer was recognized as the sole former child actor featured in a permanent exhibition at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, also known as Blacksonian. She received a breast cancer diagnosis in late September 2014.
