Despite years of conjecture regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s English language proficiency, the Russian leader demonstrated his English language proficiency on Friday. Parts of Putin’s address were delivered in English on Friday while he was standing next to Donald Trump during their summit in Alaska.

What did Putin say in English at the Alaska summit?

Putin ended his remarks with a few words in English, despite the fact that a lot of his address was translated by an interpreter.

Putin wrapped up his remarks by obliquely inviting Trump to his next meeting in Russia, which would take place in Moscow. Additionally, he expressed his appreciation to Trump in English by stating, “Thank you so much.”

Even though Putin utilized English to convey some of his ideas, he occasionally seemed perplexed. Putin gestured to his ear and displayed a perplexed expression when a reporter asked him if he would cease killing civilians.

The Russian government said Putin understands English very well

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has repeatedly assured international leaders that Putin is fluent in English, CNN reports. Peskov claimed that Putin comprehended the English-language exchange between Trump and the Russian leader in May before the translator translated the material for him.

The Kremlin also stated in 2017 that Putin occasionally corrects his translators, according to CNN. The Russian tabloid Izvestia claims that while Putin is on the run, he talks English the most.

However, Peskov stated that he naturally uses translators to communicate during formal meetings and during negotiations.

Putin is aware of the difficulty of translating, Peskov added, adding, “I have been translating at the highest level for a long time, so I know what kind of stress it is.”
