Outside Gillette Stadium is a statue of Tom Brady. The head coach who won six Super Bowls with Brady, according to one of his former colleagues, should soon have his own statue outside Gillette Stadium.
In an interview with WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show, Devin McCourty firmly supported the notion of having a statue of Bill Belichick erected at One Patriot Place, stating that it would be absurd if he didn’t.
I’m clearly biased. “I think you can’t take away from playing there, playing defense, some of the thought processes that went into some game plans, and even overall the Patriots’ success as a team,” McCourty said. Additionally, I am aware that people will think, “Post-Tom this, and pre-Tom [that].” However, given what we managed to do during my tenure there and what those men accomplished before me, I believe it would be absurd not to erect a statue of him when the time comes.
Few coaches in NFL history have ever received a statue from their former team, but Belichick appears to have fulfilled the requirements to receive one. Belichick has the most conference titles (nine) and the second-most wins (333) of any head coach in NFL history, and he has six more Super Bowls than any other coach.
However, even with a salary that may make Belichick the greatest coach in NFL history, it doesn’t appear likely that the Patriots will remember him the way they have praised Brady in recent years. After two consecutive losing seasons, Belichick’s two dozen years as head coach of the Patriots ended abruptly in January 2024.
In front of Gillette Stadium, should there be a statue of Bill Belichick next to the one of Tom Brady?Devin McCourty, quarterback: “Man, I sure hope so That success that the Patriots had, you can’t take away I think it would be ridiculous that you wouldn’t put a statue up of him.”jmcbnnq0KE pic.twitter.com/
The relationship between Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft has been the subject of much turmoil ever since. There have been some heated arguments between the two, but McCourty hopes that any animosity will eventually fade and allow Belichick to receive a statue.
According to McCourty, “you kind of rely on time healing whatever happened towards the end of everything between the Krafts and coach Belichick.” However, I just believe that having a statue of him makes a lot of sense. It doesn’t matter if it’s across the stadium from Tom or on the opposite side.
Football-wise, I believe that organization is based on the contributions those two individuals made to the squad each and every season. And we’re discussing twenty years of greatness that, in my opinion, merit a statue.
Naturally, the Patriots might be erecting a statue of a potential rival if Belichick were to be employed as an NFL head coach once more. Before taking over as head coach of UNC’s football program in December, the 73-year-old maintained a high media presence the previous season and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. But since being fired by the Patriots, Belichick has only interviewed for one head coaching position, which may indicate that his NFL career is coming to an end.
