Amherst, OH – Students and staff at Amherst Junior High School experienced an unexpected start to their day on Thursday, November 13, when a wild deer barreled through a large cafeteria window at high speed. The incident occurred at approximately 7:20 a.m., just as the school was preparing to serve breakfast.
According to a statement from Amherst Exempted Village Schools and posts on the district’s Facebook page, the sudden entrance of the animal created what officials described as a “fairly significant” situation, which was swiftly managed with the assistance of school staff and the Amherst Police Department (APD).
Deer Roams Cafeteria Before Exiting Safely
At the time, a small number of students and staff were in the cafeteria. Despite the deer crashing into an occupied space, no serious injuries were reported. The school nurse was on-site and available to assist anyone needing medical attention.
Video footage shared by the school shows the deer slipping across the smooth cafeteria floor while exploring the room. In one moment, the animal even attempts to climb onto the stage overlooking the cafeteria before eventually disappearing down a hallway. Staff members, with APD support, were able to guide the deer out of a back door, ensuring no further damage occurred.
“We were able to quickly barricade and contain the deer in the cafeteria and, ultimately, on the stage. With the help of several staff members and APD, we funneled the deer out the back door without additional damage or injury,” the district wrote in a public statement.
Breakfast Interrupted, Students Served Later
Because the breakfast service was temporarily interrupted, the school offered all students the opportunity to receive their first meal of the day during first period, ensuring no one missed out on nourishment.
School Leadership Praises Student Response

Amherst Junior High Principal Andrew Hoffman highlighted the composure and maturity of students during the chaotic situation. He encouraged community members to reach out with any questions or concerns about the incident.
“Our students handled themselves extremely well,” Principal Hoffman stated. “I am proud of their maturity and care for one another.”
The district emphasized that the situation was handled efficiently and safely, reflecting the preparedness of staff and students in responding to unexpected events.
Safety and Awareness
While this unusual incident ended without serious injury, school officials stressed the importance of remaining calm and following staff instructions in emergencies. The quick, coordinated response prevented the situation from escalating and ensured the safety of all involved.
