Deadly Three-Car Crash Shuts Down I-96 in Michigan; Speed Suspected

A 19-year-old man from Detroit was killed Wednesday morning in a three-car crash on westbound I-96 near Kensington Road, according to the Michigan State Police.

The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. on July 23, when the man, driving a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu, was reportedly speeding at over 100 mph. Witnesses told police the Malibu was in the right lane before swerving into the middle lane and striking another vehicle.

The impact caused both vehicles to lose control, and a third vehicle was then hit. The Malibu overturned and collided with a construction traffic trailer, police said.

The driver of the Malibu was pronounced dead at the scene. One other driver sustained minor injuries.

Authorities say speed was a factor in the crash. It is not yet known whether alcohol or drugs played a role.
