Whitney Point, NY — The Broome County Fair kicked off Tuesday with thrilling rides, classic fair food, and a celebration like never before as it marks its 150th anniversary — a major milestone in the region’s rich agricultural history.
Organizers say this year’s fair is unlike any before. “With this being 150 years, we’re really trying to make it the biggest, the best fair we’ve had in our history,” said Jonah Reardon, Vice President of the Broome County Agricultural Board.
While the fair has evolved over the decades — including a previous location in Binghamton — it has remained a pillar of summer tradition in the community. The event was only paused during World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
“People would work hard throughout the year, and this was the chance for everyone to get together and celebrate,” said longtime fair supporter Luther. “In the early days, it was all about agriculture.”
This year’s fair places a special emphasis on honoring its past. Organizers have enjoyed hearing nostalgic stories from residents whose families have attended for generations. “It’s really been a thrill this year for us to focus on this milestone,” Reardon added.
From livestock shows to carnival games, the Broome County Fair continues to bring joy to locals and visitors alike — proving that some traditions never grow old.
