Brooklyn Center, Minnesota — Police in the Twin Cities suburb fatally shot an armed man Monday afternoon after he allegedly opened fire on officers, authorities said. Minneapolis police officials later confirmed the man was suspected in a double homicide earlier that day.
According to the Brooklyn Center Police Department, officers responded around 3:55 p.m. to reports of a man waving a gun near retail stores along Brooklyn Boulevard between the 5500 and 5600 blocks.
When officers arrived, they were confronted by the armed individual.
Officials said gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and officers, and the suspect was struck.
Officers, who were wearing body cameras, rendered first aid before the man was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
No officers were struck by gunfire. An undisclosed number of officers have been placed on critical incident leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
Suspect Linked to Earlier Double Fatal Shooting
Brian O’Hara, chief of the Minneapolis Police Department, said the man shot in Brooklyn Center was suspected of killing two people earlier Monday in north Minneapolis.

Authorities said a 14-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man were killed in a shooting around 3:30 p.m. in Minneapolis.
“We believe that the suspect from this double murder left the scene and shortly thereafter became involved in a shooting with police in Brooklyn Center,” O’Hara said.
Police have not yet released the suspect’s name.
State Agency Leading Investigation
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
Officials said the intersection of Xerxes Avenue North and 56th Avenue North will remain closed for an extended period as investigators process the scene. The location is near the retail area surrounding the former Brookdale Mall site.
Witness Accounts
Community members in the area described hearing numerous gunshots.
Activist Nekima Levy Armstrong, who was nearby at the time, said she heard repeated shots and took cover beside her car.
“I heard so many gunshots,” she said, describing the chaotic scene.
