Astros hold off Red Sox rally in Alex Bregman’s Houston return

HOUSTON (AP) Chas McCormick blasted his first home run of the season, and Ram n Ur had three hits, including a two-run homer, as the Houston Astros jumped out to a 7-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.

The Astros were swept in Boston at the beginning of the month, but Carlos Correa’s RBI single helped them win. After joining the organization in a big trade from the Twins, it was his first home game.

After missing more than 14 months due to Tommy John surgery, Houston starter Cristian Javier (1-0) had a strong return game. After giving up two singles and two runs in the first inning, he calmed down and only allowed one single in the following four innings.

In his first game in Houston since departing the Astros this offseason, Boston took an early lead thanks to a two-run home run by Alex Bregman in the first inning.

Houston took the lead with three runs in the third, and McCormick’s two-run drive in the fourth and Ur’s two-run bomb in the fifth made it 7-2.

However, the Red Sox closed within one run in the seventh inning after scoring four runs with two outs, led by home runs from Abraham Toro and Roman Anthony. Jarren Duran grounded out to finish the inning after Bregman singled.

In the ninth inning, Bennett Sousa came over and struck out Anthony to complete the inning and record his fourth save after Connor Wong doubled off Enyel De Los Santos with two outs.

Garrett Crochet (13-5) of Boston ended a nine-game winning streak and suffered his first loss since May 26 after giving up seven hits and tying a season-high five runs in a season-low four innings.

Ur chin, who tied a season high in hits after finishing three hits short of the cycle, was acquired from Baltimore at the deadline.

Anthony was struck out by Sousa in the ninth inning.

It was McCormick’s first home run since August 28.

The series continues Tuesday night with Houston RHP Spencer Arrighetti (1-2, 7.43 ERA) facing RHP Dustin May (6-8, 4.93).
