Arctic Blast to Bring Snow and Cold Weather to Maryland on Thursday. BALTIMORE — The workweek will end with wintry conditions as another blast of Arctic air arrives.

By Thursday morning, an arctic cold front is expected to move into the area, bringing with it the possibility of rain and snowfall.

Precipitation will transition to all snow and then taper off as temperatures decrease. It is anticipated that any snowfall will be brief, although it may be sufficiently heavy to cover the ground. Slick spots may form when snow falls heavy, especially in higher elevations north and west of Baltimore, but most places should avoid major travel problems. Less than an inch of snow is predicted to fall in the majority of regions.

Blizzard Warning for Western Maryland

In western Maryland, Garrett County is under a blizzard warning, with the potential for up to 10 inches of snow. At times, visibility will be almost nonexistent due to regions of blowing and drifting snow caused by wind gusts over fifty miles per hour. From now until Friday morning, it is highly discouraged to travel in this area.

Wind Advisory for Most of Maryland

With northwest gusts predicted to reach 50 mph in the wake of the front, a wind advisory is in effect for a large portion of the state. Dispersed tree damage and localized power outages could result from these powerful gusts. Following the front’s passage, the heaviest gusts are expected to persist until Thursday’s mid-afternoon. The winds will progressively lessen as the evening wears on.

Temperatures during the day With wind chills in the teens, Thursday’s temperature will stay in the 30s. Thursday afternoon through early Friday morning will be the coolest time of day.

Enhancing the Situation by the Weekend

The most of Friday’s sky will be sunny, with highs in the mid- to upper-30s. Friday night will see overnight lows in the low to mid-20s, with some respite from the strong winds.

Saturday will see a return to warmer temperatures, with highs close to 40 degrees under largely sunny skies. As the weather pattern changes, a major warm-up is anticipated late this weekend and early next week. With bright skies and highs in the low 50s, Sunday will be the most notable day of the weekend.

Rain Returns Next Week

Sunday night will see more clouds, and Monday there will be a risk of rain again. With highs in the mid-50s on Monday and low to mid-60s on Tuesday, the weather will be significantly warmer. Throughout the first part of next week, there will be multiple chances for showers due to an active weather trend. There will be plenty of sunlight and pleasant temperatures through Wednesday before dropping below normal by the end of the week.
