Washington, D.C. — The nation’s capital is set to be one of the biggest places to celebrate July 4, 2026, as the city takes center stage for America’s 250th anniversary. The National Park Service says the Independence Day celebration will include a spectacular fireworks show over some of the country’s most iconic monuments and historic sites.
What to Expect in Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. is preparing for a milestone Independence Day with Freedom 250 events at the National Mall and Memorial Parks. The NPS says July 4 weekend will feature both the Great American State Fair and the Salute to America 250 Celebration and Fireworks.
An official Freedom 250 event page lists Saturday, July 4, 2026 at the Washington Monument Grounds and says doors open at 1:00 p.m., with the fireworks show set for approximately 10:30 p.m. ET and lasting about 40 minutes. The same page also says security magnetometers open at 8:00 a.m., and that Metro and rideshare are strongly recommended because parking is extremely limited.
Best Places to Watch the Fireworks
The National Park Service says the fireworks display is expected to happen on the evening of July 4, and its official watch guide lists popular viewing areas including the U.S. Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, National Mall, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the White House Ellipse, West Potomac Park, East Potomac Park, and Anacostia Park.
Washington.org also notes that the National Mall is the most popular place to watch the fireworks, with excellent views near the Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, and Lincoln Memorial. It also says the fireworks are launched from both sides of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
How to Plan Your Visit
If you are heading to D.C. for the holiday, plan to arrive early. The Freedom 250 event page says large crowds are expected and that the public viewing area is first-come, first-served. It also directs visitors to enter via Constitution Avenue NW or Independence Avenue SW, with the entry queue on 14th Street NW.
The NPS also warns that the fireworks may be delayed or cancelled because of bad weather and says alerts can be received by texting JULY4DC to 888777.
More Than Just Fireworks
Washington, D.C. makes July 4 feel like a full-day celebration, not just an evening show. Washington.org says Independence Day in the capital also includes A Capitol Fourth on July 3, special events at the National Archives, rooftop celebrations, museums, baseball at Nationals Park, and other citywide activities tied to America’s 250th anniversary.
For visitors who want the full patriotic experience, D.C. offers one of the most dramatic backdrops in the country, with fireworks lighting up the skyline above the monuments and memorials that define the city.
